JAYAPURA (LINTAS  PAPUA)   – Pelaksanaan Konferensi Tingkat Tinggi Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) atau Kerja sama Ekonomi Asia Pasifik, forum ekonomi 21 negara di Lingkar Pasifik, yang diselenggarakan di Papua Nugini, pekan kemarin, turut menjadi sorotan Gubernur Lukas Enembe.

Pemimpin Papua yang dipercaya rakyat menjadi kepala daerah untuk kedua kalinya ini, menduga potensi sumber daya alam (SDM) di negara pasifik, ikut menjadi incaran sejumlah negara, yakni Amerika Serikat dan China.

Oleh karenanya, dia berharap seluruh masyarakat Papua tak terkecuali para pemuda untuk bersiap-siap dan waspada menjaga disetiap pintu masuk bumi cenderawasih.

“Kita perlu jaga Papua. Sebab sekarang terjadi perebutan antara Amerika dan China di kawasan pasifik. Saya tidak tahu siapa yang akan menang apakah Amerika Serikat atau China. Apalag pangkalan militer China sudah dibangun di seluruh pasifik. Begitu pula Amerika serikat,”

terang dia, saat menghadiri kegiatan kepemudaan, di Kota Jayapura, kemarin.

Menurut dia, pemuda Papua dan Indonesia yang ada diatas tanah ini wajib untuk tidak lengah dengan persoalan itu. Sebab politik internasional saat ini, terjadi sangat cepat pasca “perang dagang” antara Amerika Serikat dan China.

“Makanya sekali lagi pemuda Papua harus bersiap diri melawan apa pun yang terjadi di kawasan ini. Yang pasti harus berani mempersiapkan diri menghadapi tantangan perubahan politik yang sedang teradi antara Amerika dan China,” serunya.

Pada kesempatan itu,  Lukas mendorong pemuda Papua untuk bisa menjadi pelaku bisnis di kawasan pasifik. Pihaknya pun telah membangun komunikasi bersama sejumlah kepala daerah di Papua Nugini, prihal mencari kemungkinan dibukanya jalur perdagangan melalui laut.

“Sebab kalau dibuka kedua wilayah ini bisa melakukan perdagangan dengan biaya murah. Intinya akan ada banyak keuntungan bila terbuka jalur perdagangan dari Papua ke pasifik,” tegasnya.(Koran HARIAN Pagi PAPUA)

Papua New Guinea’s government has been given until tomorrow to account for all assets used during this year’s APEC meetings

These assets include Maseratis and other luxury vehicles acquired by the state for use during APEC 2018 which culminated in the Leaders’ Summit in Port Moresby last month.

The Chief Secretary to Government Isaac Lupari said the government wanted more time to finalise the APEC inventory which they would present to the Commission.

The Post Courier reported that the Ombudsman Commission granted the government an extension until 18 December.

However, the government is still waiting for a number of assets to be returned.

The government advertised through the Central Supplies and Tenders Board for all APEC assets to be returned.

It has warned people that failure to return assets is illegal, and that those who hold on to them will be “severely dealt with”.

Meanwhile, PNG’s Minister for APEC said that all the Maseratis used during the APEC Summit would now be going through a tender process for those interested in buying the vehicles.

Justin Tkatchenko told Loop PNG that most of all the vehicles have already been booked by interested parties who would have to go through the tender process before they were handed over to the buyers.

He said for now the government no longer had anything to do with the luxury vehicles, which were the subject of controversy when imported for the summit.

“They are now being handed over to the Central Supplies and Tenders Board, and the Finance Department, where they will then tender them out and sell them to those that are interested in those vehicles,” he explained to local media.

“I believe that most of the vehicles have already been booked.”

Jury out on cost of APEC to PNG

The jury remains out on whether Papua New Guinea will reap the benefits of hosting the APEC leaders summit.

Hundreds of APEC meetings held in PNG throughout the year culiminated in last weekend’s Leader’s Summit in Port Moresby.

The government has been asked by the parliamentary opposition to reveal how much public money was spent on APEC and account for each item of spending.

The director of PNG’s Institute of National Affairs Paul Barker said the direct costs of hosting the summit would not be fully recovered by the government.

He said while costs in certain areas were covered by other countries and donor partners, PNG faced significant costs for items including three large cruise ships, some of the infrastructure costs, and buildings of conference facilities.

“But the big question is economically. And that’s going to be a benefit that will happen over the course of time,” he explained.

While the government argued that many investors would come and eye opportunities in PNG during the summit, there weren’t necessarily many in attendance, Mr Barker said.

However some important investors were present, he said.

Mr Barker applauded the efforts of foreign journalists who ventured beyond the confines of the APEC leaders summit venues last week in Port Moresby to meet Papua New Guineans.

He said he had read grumblings on social media that thid could give a bad impression of PNG.

But he argued there was nothing more relevant to developing the country, including its tourism industry, than allowing foreigners to see the real PNG “warts and all”.

“We can’t develop a trousim industry on trying to conceal,” Mr Barker said.

“Having that level of international interaction actually will demonstrate that ordinary Papua New Guineans are ordinary people in the rest of the planet but also they are interesting people.

“There’s an interesting dialogue and then they can also see that these are hard-working people with their own challenges. These are not corrupt people. They are honest people.”
